The Shimpaku Juniper Tree at Hoshoin Temple

The largest Chinese Junuiper in Japan can be found at Hoshoin Temple, Shodoshima Pilgrimage Temple No.54. The girth of the tree trunk is 16.6m, and it is 20m tall. The trunk branches into three stems, and it is still growing well at a healthy rate. Some part of the trunk at the bottom is rotten and hollow, which creates a holistic appearance. It is said that the tree has been planted by Emperor Oujin and the well-aged tree is estimated to be over 1500 years old.
